Review Isoland 2: Ashes of Time

Brandon Girod
9.5Excellent
Hand-drawn artwork, very challenging, offers new game+, non-linear puzzles
Poor sound fidelity, ambiguous beginning to the game
I’m sure many of you won’t remember Salad Fingers but that’s the exact vibe and atmosphere Isoland conveys. Isoland 2: Ashes of Time for Android is the next game in Cotton Game’s point-and-click adventure series. It’s a game that features many familiar aspects of the original, such as the mind numbing but clever puzzles, hand-drawn animations and atmosphere, but it changes some pretty big ways that fans of the original will probably enjoy.
In the first game, you played as a scientist that came to Isoland to investigate strange things happening on the island. In the sequel, you play as a completely new character who finds the ability to travel back and forth through time. It’s a mechanic you’ll use often in the game. More excitingly is the fact that the game doesn’t push the player in certain directions anymore. The game is now totally non-linear, which means the player is free to solve puzzles in whichever order they desire (within reason).
While the game does build off its predecessor in many ways, it’s not exactly an easy game and the only hand-out the game gives is a hint system. Puzzles are pretty difficult and there is a good learning curve when it comes to understanding the game’s puzzle logic. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll likely find yourself totally immersed in the game’s odd but quirky world.
Isoland 2: Ashes of Time is a pretty great sequel to a well respected puzzle game, and one that is definitely worth its price. The puzzles are great, the artwork is phenomenal and the game just oozes style.
