Novel and fun marble-based gameplay, fun minion system
Lackluster design, cluttered ui
Flick, flick, flick. Welcome to Flick Arena for Android. This game is a competitive arcade game in the same vein as something like Clash Royale except that is a turn-based real-time strategy. Sounds like an oxymoron, right? Well, it's not. It's an interesting game where both players take a moment to plan out their next moves and watch as both sides play out at the same time.
So, I'm a little mixed about this game. The overall presentation leaves a little bit to be desired, but I really enjoyed the game's mechanics. To start, you have four minions on each side and a "king" that shares a role similar to that of a king in Chess. You can flick your four minion marbles around but not your king, and if your king dies, you lose. These minions also act like party characters in an RPG. You unlock them in chests, they have their own stats, and you can level them up by combining them.
While the gameplay is fun, I found the total package to feel a bit cheap. The artwork isn't great. It definitely looks like a free-to-play game because none of the designs feel new or unique. The tutorial is annoying, and the game just adopts too many of the negative aspects of competitive mobile games when it comes to having to wait for chests to unlock and grinding for new characters.
Flick Arena is a game I really want to like. The mechanics are novel and fun. However, the total package just leaves me feeling like there will be another game to come along with better production value that will bury this game.
