Unique gameplay elements for a mobile game, fun controls
Customizing your character is expensive and options are limited
Skating games are a rare sight nowadays, but there was a time when no one could wait for the next Tony Hawk Pro Skater to come out. In a lot of ways Epic Skater 2 for Android is game that reminds me a lot of Tony Hawk Pro Skater, and that’s probably because it rips some of the sound effects straight out of the game.
This is very much a mobilized version of a Tony Hawk game, and it’s actually pretty complicated. It took me multiple times to get through just the first career level simply because I couldn’t remember all the instructions. The controls are all gesture based and are pretty well thought out. You’ll tap and hold down a button to ollie. After you let go of the button, swiping up, left, down and right will all do different tricks. You can also grind, land in an ollie to link tricks into combos and incorporate spin moves and flips.
The game is broken down into two modes: Career Mode and Endless. You can imagine what endless mode is, but career makes you pull off certain moves in each level so you can unlock the stage in free play and move on to new stages. You’ll also earn money that can be used to give yourself some temporary boosts or purchase cosmetics, though none of these things really appealed to me while I played.
Epic Skater 2 is a really fun, if not a bit dense, skating game that pretty much makes itself at home on the mobile platform. So, if you’re looking for a game that’s got a little meat it and you’re into skating, you’ll definitely want to pick this one up.
