Fun, bite-sized gameplay, lots of unique scenarios
Controls are awkward, rewards are lackluster
Not every mobile arcade game is created equal. Some break the mold and actually establish something truly special in an already crowded space. Pocket Pool for Android is one of those games. It takes one of the most fun games that exists and turns it into a pocket-sized version of the game so you can have fun or even practice a bit while on the go.
If you’ve never played pool before, I don’t know what to say. It’s a blast. There are 15 balls on the table. Seven are striped and seven are solids, and there is one eight ball that becomes available to knock in a pocket when you finish knocking the rest of your respective balls in the pocket. This game takes that idea and basically puts the user in bite-sized situations where you must hit one ball into a pocket from different angles, and sometimes with other balls in the way.
It’s an arcade game, so the objective is to keep hitting them in for as long as you can. The first time you miss, the game is over. As you play, you’ll get access to different shards that can then be used to buy new skins for the pool table and new pool cues. Honestly, there could have been a lot more effort put into the skins, though. Everything is just a different color, and you can’t see what other skins are available to unlock, so the game doesn’t provide much incentive to keep playing once you begin to get bored.
The pacing in the game is a little off. Sometimes there will be somewhat difficult shots and then you’ll get five easy shots in a row. It takes a while to get to any truly difficult shots. Even still, I really like what Pocket Pool has to offer. It feels like a unique mobile arcade game.
