Review DROOM

Brandon Girod
Amazing art design, intriguing gameplay, evolving levels
Movement can be hard to manage at times
Puzzles, puzzles everywhere. That’s what the current Android gaming ecosystem looks like. Or maybe I somehow took a wrong turn on my Play Store and can’t seem to find my way out. Either way, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how many unique and charming puzzles games I’ve ran across recently, DROOM for Android just being the most recent game.
What I loved about this game right off the bat was its design. The game looks absolutely beautiful. Character models and the environment are voxel-based, which happens to really compliment the game’s pastel colors. And the animation is pretty great, too.
Gameplay is fun, interesting and thought provoking. The idea is that you need to get from your starting point to your destination with the correct number of orbs (or is it ore?). You need to reach your destination within a certain number of moves, so that means you have to think ahead about where you’re going. If you need black ore and you run over white ore then you’ll lose black ore. The reverse is also true. And since you accumulate ore in groups then you’ll have to use this method of addition and subtraction to end up with the right number of ore.
The level design in DROOM is pretty cut and dry in the beginning and it makes that game simple. But you’ll soon hit longer levels that will really make you think, making this a truly engaging game in the long run. The gameplay married with its amazing graphics and design really put this game above the rest of its peers.
