Great graphics, inventive gameplay mechanics
Hunting season is coming, and it’s up to you to assemble a crew hardy enough to fight the beasts that plague the seas around your home. In Viking Hunters for Android, you direct a crew as they fight not for their lives but for loot! It’s their job, and it’s your job to get them home safely so they can upgrade all of their equipment and get back out to sea.
I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I first booted up Viking Hunters. Was this an arcade game? An RPG? Well, it’s a little bit of both. There is no character building, but you will be upgrading parts of your ship that will help you get further and further into the game And the gameplay is pretty fun. Every mission is against a giant sea monster that has emerged from the depths.
You’ll use directional on-screen buttons to navigate the ship in a position for your crew to lob projectile attacks at each beast. But it’s not that easy. You’ll also have to make sure you’re avoiding attacks the monster is throwing at you, whether it be tentacle by sea or something it’s throwing at you from the air.
Each time you go out on a voyage, you can fight as many monsters as you think you’ll be able to conquer. The further you get, the bigger the reward but the threat of death is bigger, too. Once you get back to land, you can use your loot to pay your blacksmith to upgrade certain power up attacks that you get while fighting.
I loved a lot of things about Viking Hunters, but the game did become pretty tedious. For instance, you always have to fight the first fight, which becomes trivial - and therefore boring - after awhile. You can then jump to certain levels, but you can’t straight pick them. It’s a good, fun game, but I wish it was a bit more linear - not something I say often.
