Review Color Magnet

Brandon Girod
Deep gameplay mechanics, multiple gameplay modes, straight addictive
Games can drag
When you play game after game, it’s really difficult to find a game that enthralls your imagination so much that you find yourself lost to time the first time you play it. That’s what happened to me when I played Color Magnet for Android. It’s a puzzle game that doesn’t look like much at first glance, but if you give it a chance, it’ll reward you, I promise. Not convinced? Read the rest of my review to find out.
At face value, sure, this is just another matching game. But it’s also so much more. It’s the game’s mechanics that make it interesting. You’ll start the game with a grid and a few colored squares on the top line of the grid. Depending on the mode you have, you have a certain number of moves to place randomly colored squares in positions to either give yourself an advantage in the future or eliminate blocks.
Running out of moves will advance the line down. If the squares on the grid pass the bottom of the screen then it’s game over. Think about it like a reverse, turn-based Tetris game. The biggest difference is that you’re only placing individual blocks, and you’re matching based on color. You need to match 5 or more blocks of the same color to eliminate them. The mechanics can get pretty deep, so I won’t waste my time, but suffice to say I put hours into this game and I still had a lot to learn about its best practices.
Still, after several games, I found myself absolutely glued to my screen. It was almost hard to pull myself away from my phone to write this review. There are three game modes in total. Classic gives you five turns per level, universal gives you three and puzzle sets up different scenarios that you have to solve within a few turns. Each offers its own difficulties to learn.
What more can I say? Color Magnet is a fantastic mobile game that is anything but quick. You probably won’t be playing too many quick games unless you’re playing the puzzle mode, but if you’re standing in line at the DMV, this game will be your best friend.
