Beautiful graphics, tight controls, tons of upgrade paths
Forgettable story, long wait times
Welcome to the streets. Alright, sorry, you’re right. I’m definitely not cool enough to make that sound good. Anyway, welcome to Asphalt Street Storm Racing for Android. The name leaves something to be desired, but the gameplay is pretty much what you’ve come to expect from an Asphalt racing game. So if you’re a fan, you’ll find yourself right at home. Otherwise, you probably aren’t going to have a very good time.
This isn’t a true racing game, so if you’re looking for a simulator or arcade experience, this isn’t it. You aren’t driving around beautiful courses and admiring colorful landscapes. You’re in street races down urban drag strips. The only control you have over your car is the ability to shift gears and launch with some kind of advantage. You also have the ability to bring out the nos when you unlock the ability.
There is a bit of story peppered throughout the game, but it’s mostly just a platform to give context to the rivals you meet along the way. Progression comes in the form of buying upgrades for your car and racing against computer characters. You can also seamlessly challenge human players to races on the same race screen, though you have to bet your money, so you really need to make sure you’re bringing your A game.
Asphalt Street Storm Racing is definitely a game I felt like I’ve played before. That’s because it has a lot of mechanics I’ve seen in plenty of other games that look just like it. There’s also the added wait times that can become extremely long quickly. It’s still a good game at its core, just not something innovative.
