Stellar graphics, incredible combat system, epic loot
Repetitive gameplay, enemies can seem way too easy at times
Fighting games and action games are a tough sell on mobile. These are genres that typically thrive on fast reaction and incredibly solid controls, but it’s hard to be quick on a phone when a game uses virtual buttons. But Gameloft might have struck gold (or maybe oil) with Iron Blade - Medieval Legends for Android. It’s an action game that uses a combat system not completely unlike the combat system popularized by WB’s Batman Arkham series.
I originally called this game an action game, but it’s more like an RPG action game than a straight-laced action game. The combat system is really simple, and there is a great tutorial that teaches you how to play without taking up too much time. Much like the Batman combat system, you’ll fly around the screen attacking whichever target you’re locked on to by tapping the right screen. You’ll get an indicator over someone’s head when they’re about to attack you and you can tap the left side of the screen to parry and counterattack.
The controls are pretty great, but targeting can be a pain. You’ll swipe on the right side of the screen to swap between targets, but there really doesn’t seem to be an intelligent way to do that. I also found that at times I would end up fighting with the camera because I have no control over it. This leads to fighting enemies off screen and not being able to see when they’re about to attack you.
As you go from level to level, you’ll level up your character and get new gear. New gear will be used to beef up your character a bit, but it also changes the way your character looks, which is a nice added perk.
I never really go into Gameloft games with high expectations but Iron Blade - Medieval Legends is a really solid action RPG. It has great graphics and seems to be one of the more unique games on the market right now.
