Unique visuals, intuitive control scheme
Base mechanics are lackluster, upgrade system is boring
If you’re a console or PC gamer, think back to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and recall the AC130 gunship level. You remember, the one where you’re flying around the level in a big gunship and you get to basically light everything on the screen up. That’s basically Zombie Gunship Survival for Android, but they made an entire game out of it - for better or for worse.
Right out of the gate, I was immediately drawn to the game’s unique perspective. You watch the havoc unfold below you through the gun ship's radar screen. Sure, the novelty of the game’s aesthetic does wear off a bit as you play, but it’s a really unique element for mobile.
The game revolves around completing objectives throughout each level. Your job is to protect your team while they’re looting buildings on the ground. At the start of each level, you get a chance to scope it out and decide where to drop your guys off. This is a good way to check out the zombie nests ahead of time and make sure you’re not throwing your guys down right on top of a tower. Speaking of which, for some reason this game has defense towers that are also trying to gun you down, which doesn’t make much sense given the zombie threat.
As you play through the game, you’ll earn money that can be used to buy new equipment and upgrade old equipment. This was a nice addition to the game, but felt more like it was tacked on as an afterthought. Upgrades are limited though they aren’t super costly. And they’re slow to come in.
Zombie Gunship Survival is a unique take on a defense game. Its mechanics, solid controls and unique aesthetics definitely make it stand out from the crowd.
