Great atmosphere, compelling story, excellent graphics
No significant shortcomings
Yesterday! for Android is an emotional tale of lovers. It won first prize as the Best Game Creative Award in the 7th China Game Developers Awards and is a 3D puzzle game that details the story between long distance lovers from the perspective of the girl.
The game’s core mechanics revolves around rotating a cube. Not unlike a Rubik’s Cube, this game allows you to move the girl around and rotate each part of the level that she is on. The ultimate goal is to make it to her lover. Obviously, the beginning stages of the game only involves moving the level a few times. But soon you’re introduced to invisible walls and complex level designs that requires you to think many steps ahead in order to find your way.
The game is difficult but beautiful. From the art design to the music, everything just breaths heavy atmosphere. And the world feels unique. There are seven chapters throughout the game and each level is a metaphor resembling the very real struggle of dealing with a long distances relationship.
As much as I enjoyed most of the gameplay, I found that the ramp up in difficulty would spike randomly throughout the game. And the invisible wall mechanic can be downright frustrating since the exact mechanic isn’t really explained. I found my way through most by trial and error, which is always a frustrating experience.
Yesterday! is a very enjoyable 3D puzzle game but it isn’t without its faults. As much as I love the level design, some bits can be frustrating. But I think the parallels to love and the atmosphere really bring the game together.
