Quirky graphics, responsive controls
Random loot isn't fun, gameplay feels too chaotic
In the words of the ultimate gladiator, Maximus, “Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here!?” Gladiator was a fantastic movie, and I only wish Tiny Gladiators for Android was half as good as a game. Instead, it’s a game that makes a poor first impression and struggles to recoup lost ground.
In Tiny Gladiators, you play as a gladiator on a journey of vengeance. You start with humble beginnings, having zero items equipped and being the ultimate pushover, and will slowly build your way up on the corpse of your enemies. You’ll go from level to level, gladiator to gladiator earning experience points and cash as you go while enemies become increasingly more powerful.
As you might guess, experience points will allow you to level up. Leveling up doesn’t increase your stats but it does refill your stamina meter and rewards you with one ability point. The ability point can then be used to spend on two passive buffs and two skills based on which class you chose at the beginning of the game. Currency can be used to buy loot boxes with prices dependent on the rarity of the loot you can get from the box.
Unfortunately, gameplay is dependent on loot rather than skill. Gameplay is active and action-oriented. You have onscreen buttons that allow you to move forward, block, attack, jump and activate two skills. Gameplay is real chaotic, however. Jumping is a bit overpowered, and even though you can block, it’s hard to predict when you’ll get the chance to.
Tiny Gladiators is difficult right off the bat and the stamina meter is only large enough to allow you to fight three times before you have to wait, which is pretty pathetic. That says, eventually the game gets easier and there is some pretty fun end level stuff like a survival tower and more.
