Gameplay mechanics have nuance, great controls, fun style
Ads can pop up in the middle of gameplay, expensive cosmetics
At this point, looking for unique mobile arcade games in the Play Store is pretty much what we live for. Hardway - Endless Road Builder for Android pretty much says it all in the name. This is a game that combines an interesting and unique gameplay mechanic with wonderful art to create an experience that, while not totally novel, is still a fun game. Let’s get into the meat of the game.
Gameplay is simple but has a bit of nuance. As the player, your job is to build a continuous road that leads a car from island to island. The car never stops driving, so you have to be quick about it. Tapping and holding the screen will cause a road to rotate out in the direction you’ve tapped. This part is pretty crucial to surviving later in the game. If a road begins going towards the northeast while the next island is northwest, you probably want to make sure you’re swinging from the left. However, you have to be extremely quick to decide because you only have seconds to decide and then to land the road in the right place.
Playing through the game, you’ll earn currency that can be used to buy new cards. Unfortunately, it takes a really long time to earn enough coins to buy new cosmetics. I often found myself having to rely simply on opening free chests in order to afford to buy the cosmetics. The video ads can be pretty annoying in this game, too. They aren’t super frequent but I did have one pop up in the middle of gameplay, which caused me to lose my run.
Hardway is a fun mobile arcade game that has great style and good gameplay. The ads can be pretty annoying, but they don’t happen as often as other mobile games.
