Pet bullet characters are very personable, fantastic sound and art design, challenges are rewarding
Gameplay does get repetitive
It's not all too often that I find a mobile arcade that I really, truly enjoy. Most of the experiences are a bit shallow and I tend to like a little more meat with my games. Fortunately, Canon Land Family for Android showed up and something inside me just clicked with this game. The polish, the gameplay mechanics, the way the quests are structured. Everything in this game feels well thought out. So let’s jump into what makes this game click.
The art style stood out to me right off the bat. I’m not typically drawn into the cute, chibi-style art design but this game incorporates cute character design with artwork that’s very reminiscent of some kind of weird love child between Adventure Time and Super Mario World. The game feels really polished, too. Everything you do has a satisfying sound effect and the animations really look top notch.
Gameplay is pretty interesting, though not exactly deep. In each level, you’ll play as a certain character depending on which challenges you’re trying to complete. Most of the challenges are based on level, but you’ll need to repeat them over and over again. Beating the challenges will earn you more coins that can then be used, in turn, to unlock new characters. Gameplay revolves around shooting your characters into multiple canons to move across each level. You have to time your shots just right in order to make it. The higher the level, the more consecutive shots you must make.
The mechanics of the game are interesting, but it’s Canon Land Family’s total package that really seals the deal. It’s the way that everything comes together to just feel good that makes it work taking a look at.
