There are probably a million games on Android, but it definitely feels like there are only a handful of adventure games. So if you’re a fan of games like The Legend of Zelda, I’d urge you to take a look at Oceanhorn for Android. It’s a story driven adventure game that reminds me of games from Nintendo’s Zelda franchise.
Everyone knows the Zelda storyline, even though it’s not particularly good. Princess Zelda is kidnapped by Gannondorf and it’s up to Link, the Hyrulian warrior, to get her back. This isn’t that game. It kicks off with a scene where your dad is leaving you in order to prepare you for “what's to come.” Unfortunately the game doesn’t really give you a clear idea of what exactly it is that your dad does. You wake up several years into the future and find out that it’s up to you to essentially save the world from a giant sea monster and a mass of dark energy.
The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker is the basis of this game in just about every way imaginable. You sail around in a boat, explore islands, you’ve got a sword and shield, you open treasure chests and you solve puzzles in dungeons. Sure, in not a lot of detail all of that stuff sounds pretty generic, but it’s all in the style and presentation that really sells this as a Zelda clone. The good news is that the game is actually really good at what it does, so it’s difficult to really knock it.
Oceanhorn is about $5 and clocks in at just under 14 hours of gameplay. For what you’re paying for it’s certainly worth it. I did notice some slowdown issues and the writing isn’t fantastic, but I think it’s good enough for most people.
