Good graphics, fun progression system
Bloons is a series known mostly for its addictive tower defense gameplay. It gained popularity early on in the mobile setting and hasn’t really lost its moment since. Bloons Supermonkey 2 for Android features the same universe but from a different perspective. Rather than a tower defense game, the game is a shoot’em up where you fly around as a Super Monkey protecting Monkey Town from throngs of colorful balloons.
I was surprised to find that the new perspective actually breathes some new life into the franchise, and the developers didn’t take any shortcuts when creating the game. The graphics and art style are familiar, but the gameplay is completely different. You will fly your customized Super Monkey around levels as he pops balloons with two weapons strapped to each arm, and eventually a third strapped to his body.
New weapons can be purchased from the shop with money and upgraded to become more effective. Some weapons perform better against different types of enemies, so it pays to build up an impressive arsenal and keep them upgraded.
The game isn’t exactly difficult. I never died, and I’m not even sure you really take damage. Instead, you’re graded on how many balloons you can pop and how many coins you collect. Sounds easy, but it’s definitely not. Balloons come flying throughout the level from every direction and trying to hit them all is incredibly tedious.
Overall, I enjoyed Bloons Supermonkey 2. I wish the controls were a little better. Tapping the screen to fly your monkey around will automatically teleport your avatar wherever you touch, so there’s no way to create a buffer and see your character as you’re flying around. Even still, this is a really fun shoot’em up that leaves frustration at the door.
