8.4Excellent

A tapper-lite
Good graphics, bite-sized gameplay, tons of progression
Constant gameplay interruptions, terrible tutorial

Tap Smiths for Android might not be the tapping game you’re looking for. I know it wasn’t mine. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill tapper where you can leisurely tap away and watch numbers get bigger. This is an arcade tapper. A tapper-lite, if you will. I’ve gotta say, though. Just because I’m not a fan of it doesn’t mean it’s not good.
The gameplay here is really interesting because of how bite-sized everything is. Let me get my complaints out of the way first. This game has a serious tutorial mode that almost made me go gray. The bite-size gameplay is also its Achilles’ heel because it breaks up the gameplay just a bit too much. In the beginning, you’ll be interrupted after every “day” because a dude has to pop up and show you one more tiny part of the game that it could have mentioned in the beginning. Eventually, things like this stop popping up and you’re given the freedom to smith until your heart’s content.
The gameplay is interesting. You’re a blacksmith that has a very basic place to, uh, blacksmith. When you start out you can only work for a few seconds before you run out of fuel, so you have to smith as quickly as possible so you can sell it at the end. The amount you make is based on how quickly you work, how efficiently you work and what blueprints you have to work with. At the end of every round you’ll be able to sell off what you made for cash and sometimes iron. Cash is used to upgrade your various tools, which helps immensely, and iron allows you to purchase new blueprints that you find while smithing or making your items higher quality, which effectively means more cash.
I love the idea of Tap Smiths but in practice it just didn’t sit very well with me. The game looks great and I like that I can play through a few days and quick, but the fact that I have to go through so many different menus just to jump back in kills the fun for me.
