Soccer Pong for Android is exactly what it sounds like: a game of Pong with a football field theme. It plays quite different to vanilla Pong though. The walls are quite bouncy, and you can put a lot of spin on the ball by hitting it at an angle (just like in soccer). Spinning the ball doesn't necessarily work to your advantage though; in fact I found it much easier to score own goals in this game than in Pong. That's partly because I often try to hit the ball with the corner of my paddle against the wall; a tactic that works well in pong, but not so well in Soccer Pong.
Soccer Pong is a game of first to10; which makes it longer than similar games that are often out of 5. You can play in several modes: as a single game, career mode against increasingly impossible opponents, as a two player game on the same device, against a random online opponent, or against one of your friends online. The 2 player mode on the same device works well, and that’s partly thanks to the efficient fullscreen presentation, that means your fingers don’t get in the way too much. You get lots of encouraging text in the game, telling you when you’ve done a “super spin” on the ball, or when you’ve scored. You get detailed game statistics at the end on things like the number of spins, the length of the game; just like the meaningless stats you get in football matches.
With coins you earn playing the game (or maybe buy with some real cash in the store) you can upgrade through a series of faster, bigger, more spin-inducing puds. That actually seems pretty cool, and I’m interested to see how the game plays with better puds. The game would score even more points with soccer fans if you could customise to your favorite team's colors. You might say missing that feature out is something of an own goal.
