Great graphics, in-depth turn-based combat system, tons of upgrade options
As a 90’s kid, walking into Independence Day Battle Heroes for Android left me with a foreign feeling. Obviously not having seen the new movie yet, I didn’t recognize any elements of this new game. But the important question to answer is how does it play?
Well, it plays out like your typical mobile action RPG. You’ll join the Earth Space Defense force and protect Earth from an alien invasion. In order to do this, you need to create a fleet of powerful ships, win battles, and use hybrid alien technology in order to win the war.
The combat system plays out a lot like your typical turn-based RPG, but it has a rock, paper, scissors element to it. Each ship you have has different skills and stats. These skills can range from healing your team to launching an attack that makes you untargetable. Each skill has an alignment that is either strong or weak against other alignments, but the game helps you visualize these alignments by highlighting ships different colors depending on skill effectiveness.
And, just like in true mobile RPG fashion, you’ll earn parts that can be used to upgrade your ship’s stats and you can level up your ships, too.
The visual elements found in Independence Day Battle Heroes were good, but the story was pretty lackluster. Everything was written well enough, but I just never found myself caring much about what was going on. And gameplay is fairly typical. Mobile RPG fans will enjoy this one, but it won’t win over any skeptics.
