This game is why handheld tennis is awesome

Fantastic graphics, frantic gameplay
AI is too good in the early stages, slow progression
PKTBALL for Android calls itself a “hyper-charged arcade smash sport,” which is a really long description for what is basically a mobile tennis game. But, I do have to say, this is a much faster - and frustrating - version of tennis.
If I was going to judge this game by visuals alone then I would have to say this would be one of my favorite mobile games ever. I absolutely love the chibi artstyle the game has. It gives the game a really clean and polished look while still feeling like it’s got a retro feel to it. And the animations are absolutely gorgeous.
Unfortunately, I typically like to review games based on gameplay and that’s where things begin to get a bit murky for me. The problem is that the AI I played against were absolutely beasts. I’m not sure if you can even win a match against them because they were so good at predicting where I would be shooting that I could never get more than a point on them before they would totally shut me out. I’m not the best at these arcade games, but jeez, these guys are tough.
The rewards are actually worth playing the game for, though. You can get access to new characters that will change the court you’re playing on and makes the game look even more awesome. Oddly enough, though, you don’t automatically unlock new characters. When you get enough coins, you play a claw game where you get three attempts to snag prizes and it can get tricky.
PKTBALL is a game I really wanted to enjoy, but the game ultimately became too frustrating to me. My AI opponent just seemed to run circles around me and constantly losing just isn’t fun to me.
