Fully 3D graphics, 22 levels, great controls
I’m sort of a masochist when it comes to shoot’em ups. I really love playing them but I’m also so terribly bad at them. Air Attack 2 for Android is the obvious sequel to Air Attack, and you might be a bit hard pressed to figure out what the differences are between this one and the first.
The game drops us back into another WWII atmosphere. This time there are 22 new missions to complete, a fully destructible 3D environment, 30 unique tracks and five different planes you can choose from. Plus, there is a new Tail Gunner mode that puts you in the back of your plane to take down foes from a new perspective.
I liked the first game, and I went into this one with the same positive mindset, but after spending more and more time with it, I began to grow frustrated at how slow the progression became. Level objectives take focus and you’re very likely to have to replay them a few times in order to nail them. If you try and go from one level straight to the next, you’ll find yourself a little frustrated at how quickly enemies become more powerful than they’re worth dealing with, which means you have to grind to keep up.
The game looks absolutely beautiful, though. Everything is completely in 3D and the environment is now fully destructible. In fact, some of the objectives will ask you to destroy x amount of buildings.
I think Air Attack 2 is a pretty decent shoot’em up on your phone - certainly cooler than most - but the progression isn’t what I’d call fun. A player shouldn’t need to replay content in order to stay relevant in the game - they should either survive and continue onward or die.
