In-depth gameplay mechanics, lots of game modes
Poor currency system, you’re forced to play against other players
I lost my first match in Hockey Stars for Android and it set the tone for me for the rest of the time I spent with the game. This is a quasi-gambling based hockey arcade game where you put up in-game currency on the line in order to play against other players online and it’s winner takes all.
The first thing that I loved about this game was the fact that the tutorial was totally skippable. I mean, it’s already a really short tutorial anyway because the game is fairly simple, but I totally wish that every mobile game followed this trend. Tutorials should always be skippable! No exceptions!
So you’re playing a turn-based hockey game against another human being somewhere in the world. You have five players in the rink at any given time and you basically take turns shooting your players around. You see, your players are basically hockey pucks that slide around the ice and you want to try and shoot them into the puck so you can score. Whoever gets to two first wins.
I thought this game was fairly fun except the in-game currency. I don’t really like the idea that I have to win money in order to keep playing because that means I’m getting punished for being bad at the game. Winners get to play longer and losers get to wait until they get more money. It’s not a fun experience.
Hockey Stars is a good arcade hockey game that’s dragged down by a questionable currency system. Show me ads if you want, but please don’t try and take away game time as a punishment.
