Review Monster & Commander

Brandon Girod
8.3Excellent
Cute look, striking animations, deep strategy mechanics
Some performance issues, lengthy tutorial
Monster & Commander for Android is another one of those city builder/war strategy games that have flooded the market and sent all the match three games running for the trenches. In this one, you’re helping King Bacon reclaim his castles that were conquered by an evil Necromancer.
Stutter, stutter, load and stutter. I don’t know what the deal is, but this game absolutely did not want to run on my phone. After uninstalling, clearing my cache and doing everything else I could think of, the game ran borderline unplayable. And, unfortunately, I didn’t have another phone to test this one on, so I’m going to try to avoid judging the game’s terrible performance, but please be aware that you might run into the same issues.
The visual aesthetic of the game feels very different than most games like it because everything is really cutesy and the city is laid out like a sidescroller. Combat is pretty fast-paced because your skills are on a really quick cooldown and you get to fire them wherever you want. You can build your army up as you level them and gain new troops to build up.
Unfortunately for Monster & Commander, I didn’t feel blown away playing it. The constant stuttering and the lackluster gameplay completely threw me off. While I think this is probably a strong contender for a good entry to the genre, if your phone can run it, I don’t think it’s worth investing a lot of time in if you’re already invested in something else.
