Review Spellspire

Brandon Girod
Extremely fun gameplay, good progression system, excellent mechanics
IAP are mixed in with regular upgrades
Do you like word games? Does taking Scrabble to a coffee shop, grabbing a friend and drinking coffee while frantically spelling out hilarious or serious words sound like a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon? Well, maybe you’d like to give Spellspire for Android a shot. It’s a Scrabble-like game where you turn words into weapons - proving that the pen is mightier than the sword.
I honestly had a blast with this game. We’ve spent seemingly years trying to match gems, cupcakes or spooky bats and pumpkins together when we might have been missing something even easier. Matching words gives a gameplay almost infinitely more leeway in how a player can interact with the game, and I think it’s a bit better for the mind, too.
In this game, you fight enemies with words. You’re a wizard (though your name isn’t Harry) and you use words to create spells. The bigger the word, the stronger the spell. Your job is to get to the top of the spire. What’s at the top? I have no idea, but it’s a heck of a lot of fun trying to get there.
As you make your way up the spire, you’ll earn coin that can be used to upgrade your gear, and you’ll need to upgrade in order to maintain maximum ascension. Enemies get tougher, begin to have different weaknesses to exploit and start to press you for time.
Spellspire isn’t revolutionary by any means, but it’s an incredibly good word game that is well worth the download. It’s fun, not as grindy as you might expect, and super fun.
