High skill ceiling, cool graphics
Extremely difficult, can be frustrating
Gravity Square! for Android is a really fast-paced runner. You need to manipulate gravity so you can overcome obstacles and run as far as you can. It’s an arcade game where the only real objective is to get the highest score possible. Gameplay seems thin at first glance, but there are a lot of subtle nuances to the game that you’ll need to master to reach a worthy score.
Fortunately, there’s not tutorial because there really doesn’t need to be. Your character will run across the screen and all you have to do is tap it in order to flip the character from the bottom of the level to the top and vice versa. What you want to do is avoid running into a wall and that’s plenty hard enough alone. However, the game also likes to spin the level around as you play, so you’re not just trying to avoid hitting a wall, you’re also trying to decipher the level as it flips around.
Personally, I just found this to be way too much to handle and ultimately got really frustrated with the game. There are a lot of level design elements that you need to learn how to recognize in order to do well at the game, and while I appreciate that, I don’t think it necessarily makes for a great gameplay experience from a player perspective. I don’t find the game interesting enough to invest time into in order to get really good at it, though I’m sure there are players who would disagree.
Gravity Square! is a really solid and fast-paced arcade game that has a lot of potential for hardcore players, but I’m not exactly sure there are a ton of players out there who are willing to invest large amounts of time into this one.
