Very strategic combat system, dialogue is short and sweet, very unique graphics
The tutorial doesn’t explain mechanics well, progression doesn’t feel linear
Redcon for Android is a really awesome strategy game that is set in a dystopian future where the first world war never ended. Instead, humanity has grown to know nothing but war and destruction. You play as a strike commander of the Empire State who is tasked to spearhead an artillery defensive against a traitor in a last ditch attempt to end the war forever.
So, this might actually be one of the first games where I actually thought the game could have done with a bit more of a tutorial. After playing a few missions, there were still a lot of bars and gauges that were on the screen that caused me to pause and ponder what exactly they were telling me. A prime example, at one point the game asked me to use alternative modes of fire in order to be more effective, but it didn’t actually bother to tell me how to do that.
The gameplay itself is really fun, though. It almost reminds me a bit of FTL in that you have a set of tools that you pit against an enemy. These tools are either weapons or utility rooms where you can assign troops in order to operate them, and you will strategically use them to target various targets of the enemy’s in order to outplay them and win the mission. The game is a bit rough around the edges, but really, really entertaining.
Redcon was a really fun strategy game that works well on the mobile format. I do wish you could choose what you were bringing into each fight to add another layer of strategy on top of the game, but the game works nonetheless.
