premise, unique premise, cool graphics
Gameplay is repetitive, controls are wonky
Kano for Android is a really quick reflex-based arcade game. Kano is actually the name of a volcano and it’s erupting! As the player, you need to keep matching colors for as long as possible in order to hold off the lava from spewing all over the place.
So this is an arcade game about matching colors. The premise is really simple: There is a square with four quadrants of colors. Shapes with colors will spew out of the lava and come back down to land on your square. You want to spin your square to make sure it lands on the color that corresponds with the shape. If the shape lands on the wrong color then you’ll lose that shape until you get a chance to bring it back to life. If you lose all of your square then it’s basically game over for you.
There are a few power-ups you can use to gain more points. For instance, one power-up will launch you into this alternative top-down view where you control a shape that flies through the air with tilt controls. In this mode, you’ll need to guide your shape to collect coins as it flies. There are other elements to the gameplay, too, like tilting your phone to guide shapes as they bounce off your square so you can collect more coins.
Kano is a fun and intriguing game, but I found myself getting a bit bored with it faster than expected. Games can run really long once you get good and I don’t really find playing the same monotonous game over and over again to be a good reward for skill.
