New take on Angry Birds gameplay, fun mechanics
Slow unlock progression, some performance issues
And here I thought that I’d probably never play another Angry Birds game again! Angry Birds Action! for Android is Rovio’s newest entry in the Angry Birds universe and while it’s a departure from some of what the team has done before, it still very much has its roots planted in the same soil that gave birth to one of the greatest mobile games to grace Android and iOS platforms.
Action and the original Angry Birds games are pretty similar. Perspective is one of the biggest differences between the two games. Here we’re launching birds across a level from a top-down perspective. The birds also aren’t being launched through the air, either. Instead, we’re flinging them around like balls on a pinball table. The objective is to make them bounce around the level, eventually freeing bird eggs.
To be honest, though, I do kind of prefer the gameplay in the original a bit more. Part of that is because it seemed really fresh at the time. The other part stems from the fact that the physics in the game was just fun to watch. Even when you failed, it was fun to fail. I also felt like I was being really challenged. It didn’t feel like freeware in the same vein that Action does.
Angry Birds Action is mostly a return to form after Rovio sort of experimented with other popular genres. It doesn’t hit with the same impact of the original, but I think fans of the series will really enjoy this one and newcomers will get a kick out of some inventive gameplay.
