Great gameplay, cool retro graphics, nice progression system
Progression can be a grind
Going into Choppa for Android, I found myself doing the game a bit of a disservice. Let’s preface this by saying this isn’t just another boring arcade game that plays like every other game featuring pixel graphics. No, this game is legit fun that is challenging, rewarding and fun.
Every time I look at this game, I can’t help but think of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator when he screams, “Get to da choppa!” Unfortunately, you don’t get to play as Arnold in this game. Instead, you’re Rick Guiver, a reckless coast guard rescue helicopter pilot with a really cool name. I’m not sure if there is some ulterior motive here, but the premise of the game is that a terrible oil catastrophe has hit and you’ve gone against your orders in an effort to save as many people as you can.
The controls in this game are really tight - you simply tap and hold where you want to go. The first few levels are really simple, all you need to do is fly to the person who needs to be rescued, pick them up and fly them back to the platform. As you get further into the game, you’ll find fish that jump out of the sea to try and hit you, and a lot of environmental dangers that will test your piloting skills.
Eventually, you’ll die and you’ll need to start all over again. This gives you an opportunity to upgrade your helicopter to help you get further, and you can even buy new helicopters to build on. I think the upgrade paths really add a lot of longevity to this game.
Choppa is an awesome arcade game with great graphics and truly fun gameplay mechanics.
