Review Reveal the Deep

Brandon Girod
8.0Excellent
Great ambient sounds, thick atmosphere
Slow-paced gameplay, poor visibility throughout
Typically when it comes to games, I like to enjoy plenty of light. In fact, the absence of light is a huge turnoff in most games. One, because I’m just afraid of the dark and two, well, go back to number one. In Reveal the Deep for Android, the game actually uses light as a mechanic in the game and it does so in a very cool and non creepy way.
In Reveal, you play an underwater explorer who is taking a dive in a 19th century shipwreck. As you explore the wreckage, you’ll begin to discover why the ship sank and what became of its passengers and crew. Since you’re underwater, you can definitely assume that it’s going to be super dark down there. The atmosphere that the darkness creates, in tandem with the amazing ambient sound and music, creates a really cool feeling as you’re walking around.
The gameplay is a bit slow-paced for my blood, however. You’ll walk around pretty slowly and since it’s so dark, it’s difficult to really judge where you’re going. Fortunately, you do have a light that emanates from your suit, so you can kind of see where you’re going. And you’ll need to actually swap between having the light on and off because the layout of the ship sometimes changes depending on what kind of light is hitting it.
Reveal the Deep isn’t my favorite game, but I can’t deny how atmospheric it is. It’s not spooky, but it does create a little bit of a tense feeling as you’re walking around. I only wish that it was a little more fast-paced.
