Review Versus Run
Another shallow arcade game
Author: Brandon Girod
Date: 29 Apr 2017, tested on HTC One M8
Interesting setup, good graphics
Shallow mechanics, useless power-ups
Versus Run for Android is a Ketchapp arcade game that is no deeper than a puddle. It’s another mindless arcade game that has a great aesthetic, but doesn’t really do anything for me as a player. It’s entertaining and novel for the first five minutes, but once you realize how much you have to play just to get your first unlock, you’ll immediately be put off.
The objective of the game is to keep away from your opponent for as long as possible. You can move diagonally right and left, and you’ll need to move between moving tiles in order to keep going. This part is pretty simple until you throw in the guy that’s chasing you. This is where the game gets cheap. You can never truly get away from the enemy. Even if you play extremely well, the game will just speed up your opponent so that he’s still right behind you.
There are even power-ups in the game that will artificially speed you up so you can try and get ahead, but I can’t help but ask myself why they even bothered including it when the guy chasing you is pretty much always the same distance behind you. It makes the game not only frustrating, but pointless to play because there is never really any skill involved unless you just want to get further, which seems pointless to me.
Versus Run is, once again, just another quick cash grab from Ketchapp. At this point, I wonder why anyone even bothers to play their games since they’re uninteresting and redundant.
