Review Super Monkey
A Mario clone featuring a monkey
Author: Brandon Girod

Unique characters, lots of levels
Low resolution graphics, 4:3 aspect ratio, mario clone
Surprisingly, there aren’t that many Mario clones to have graced gaming shores, but Jungle Hero for Android might give us a good glimpse as to why that’s the case. This is a platformer that is Mario through and through except it features a low resolution monkey instead of one of the most iconic characters in video games.
So this is a Mario knock off, no two ways about it. The environment looks incredibly similar, the assets look similar, everything looks like it was ripped out of Mario except the main character and the fact that everything seems to be in low resolution. Also, the game was created with a 4:3 aspect ratio. What? Why?! Phone screens are all 16:9, so it blows my mind that this game looks the way it does.
The mechanics are all very floaty, too. When you move your character and then stop, your character keeps moving for a few pixels. This is something that really doesn’t need to exist in a 2D platformer where every move can make a huge difference in gameplay. The level design is all incredibly similar, too. You really can’t differentiate one level from the next because it’s just different pillars with the same aesthetic - no new assets.
Jungle Hero is a low quality attempt at mimicking what Mario has been doing for decades and it fails in every way possible. There are plenty of other good platformers you can play on your phone, so no need to waste your time with this one.
