Simple controls, cool graphics, lots of unlocks
Pacing is bad
Smashy City for Android takes on some of the same lineage found in other Verb-y Noun named games. Here we've got the same quasi-retro pixel graphics and the same simple gameplay, but this time we're giant monsters trying to destroy a city, but that doesn't mean we aren't still on the run.
This is another really simple arcade game where things go from mindbogglingly simple to "Oh my god, I can't find my keys and I'm already 10 minutes late to work" frustrating. But I found this one to be a lot more enjoyable just from the sheer fact that you're a giant monster tearing down a city.
So all you're really doing it steering your monster into buildings and just watching it work. You can collect coins from the tops of buildings that will be used to unlock new monsters to play as, but unfortunately, none of this really makes any difference. Eventually you'll see police ramming their cars into you and this is bad. If they hit you from behind then you will lose health. Similar to Grand Theft Auto's wanted system, here you'll accrue stars and face more severe consequences. The problem is the pacing is awful. You go from 0-90 in no time.
To me, I think Smashy City would really, really benefit from having slower pacing. As soon as the cop show up, you can be sure the army is only a second behind you. Literally. The first time it happened, I went straight from two stars to five without even realizing it.
