Epic graphics, cool beats, unique gameplay
Starts off rough, even with tutorial, levels don’t change in appearance
Barrier X for Android is an endless runner that truly tests your reflexes. It’s an incredibly dynamic mobile game that changes as you progress through the game. Expect to get addicted to the game’s mind blowing visuals and awesome music.
So, I’ll be honest, I hated the first few minutes I spent with the game because it seemed wholly impossible to do just about anything. Seconds after each run, I’d find my face meeting barrier after barrier. It wasn’t until I took a step back that I saw what I was supposed to do.
Swiping left and right will move your guy over, which is explained in the tutorial. What’s not explained is the fact that if you watch the path you’re on, it will tell you if you need to get out or if you’re safe, and believe me, nowhere is safe for long. Once I began to learn the game’s ins and outs, I found myself being way more successful in actually completing levels.
What this game does well, aside from the aesthetics, is that it actually changes the way the game plays over time. New mechanics are thrown in so that you don’t get too bored by playing the same things over and over again. I found this to be especially crucial when I realized that while the mechanics of each level might change, the levels themselves all look pretty much identical. It helped liven the game up.
Barrier X is an insanely fast-paced “avoid’em’up,” as the game refers to itself as. It’s one of those games that doesn’t come around often, but is pretty much the complete package. Check it out.
