Review Kubiko

8.7Excellent
Unique graphics, interesting gameplay
Some puzzles are hard to see, some gameplay changes are in order
Kubiko for Android is a 3D puzzle game that challenges you in a number of different ways. There are 96 levels that span across 12 themes, each based around reconfiguring pixelated sculptures of whatever the themes might indicate.
I was really intrigued by this game right off the bat because of both the art style and the premise of the game. It’s clean and minimalistic but also kind of retro because of how the sculptures are created. It made me think that said game would probably be the peak of my own artistic abilities if I had made it. But then I got into the game.
At first, you’re introduced to the mechanics with a really short description of twisting the sculpture around in a few ways so that it matches together to make whatever the finished product is. The first one was obviously really simple. After that, I went straight into animals and was immediately stumped. There was a chicken than I just couldn’t figure out.
After spending about five minutes working on the puzzle, I ended up getting pretty frustrated. You only have a set amount of “turns” you can take before you have to start over. Technically, you’re graded on how many turns it takes you to beat the puzzle, but you’re not necessarily penalized for failing the puzzle. So what ends up happening is that you’ll make five twists and then the puzzle resets. Instead, it would make a lot of sense for there to never be a fail state, and instead just make it so that you only get one star if you take more than five stars.
Eventually, I decided that I was going to take a look at some other puzzles and was able to solve them easily enough. I had a good time playing Kubiko when it wasn’t frustrating, but I think the game could throw in some quality of life improvements that would make the game feel less frustrating when you’re failing.
