Breathtaking visuals, great audio, interesting mechanics
Obstacles are sometimes hard to pick out, resulting in cheap deaths
Alto’s Adventure for Android is a game that literally just released on Android, and it looks to be one of the more promising arcade games that I’ve seen in recent years. Here you’ll join Alto and all of this buddies as they embark on a grand snowboarding journey. You’ll snowboard through hills, over beautiful wilderness, through neighboring villages, and through ancient woodlands - all while you’re also saving llamas. Sounds like a weird game, huh? It kind of is.
The game’s aesthetics is probably the biggest driving factor to play this game. The design and artwork all feels incredibly unique. I can’t think of a single other mobile game (or any game for that matter) that looks like this game. But the game also plays around a bit with camera angles to make it feel and look really unique, too.
The gameplay is, unfortunately, incredibly familiar, though it is fleshed out a bit more than other games like it. Your character will automatically move forward and you can do things like jump, do tricks and grind. Performing tricks and landing them will give you a speed boost which is useful in some situations.
Alto’s Adventure is ultimately just another endless arcade game, however. It still uses the same tired mechanics we’ve seen countless times before, and even though it looks absolutely fantastic, I wasn’t impressed with it as a game. I would have loved to have seen the game go a bit further with the tricks, and allow the player with more freedom in options in terms of linking tricks and combos together. It would have felt like a much more interesting game. In the end, this is still just a game about how far you can go.
