Good design, game changes as you play
A difficult start, rewards are slow to come by
Arcade games are a dime a dozen on mobile platforms. Spike Run for Android is just another arcade game that doesn’t do much to separate itself from other games like it that are over saturating the market already. But, also like most arcade games, they’re so simple that it’s really hard to say it’s bad.
This game has you trying to avoid spikes as your block automatically follows a preset path. When I initially booted up this game, I had a lot of issues trying to figure out what was going on. Tapping the screen makes the spikes retract into the ground, but they only stay retracted for about a second or two. I had a really frustrating time figuring out when exactly I needed to tap the screen in order to get past the first spike. I had to have died like 10+ times before it finally clicked.
Part of the issue is that the game starts you off with a ridiculously slow run speed. That means you’re actually at a bit of a disadvantage when you start off. You’ll slowly start to pick up more speed and that’s about the time I really found my groove. Around the 17th spike is when you get another speed boost and I found myself dying there a lot until I realized what exactly was happening.
Spike Run is an interesting arcade game, and I actually found myself having more fun with it than I typically do when I play games like this. Unfortunately, I did have a rough time starting off, and the rewards are really grindy.
