Review Heatos

8.4Excellent
Unique puzzle gameplay, limited ads, good aesthetic
Vague tutorial
Heatos for Android is probably one of the most unique number puzzle games I’ve played recently. It’s a game that sort of retains what you’ve come to expect from games like it, but offers unique gameplay concepts that puts it ahead of other puzzle games that only ever want you to match up numbers.
In this game, you’re going to need to figure out how your number tiles can traverse the board. Each puzzle is like a complicated math problem though you’re only ever handling addition and subtraction.
The tutorial kicks things off and this is where I think they could have done a better job explaining the game. There are several levels in the tutorial and there really doesn’t need to be. I skipped reading the first few tutorials and went right to solving the puzzles, but I eventually stopped because there were some mechanics I didn’t think I understood at face value. The problem is that the game uses really vague images to describe itself. So it’ll show something like a blue tile equals no tile. Within the context of the puzzle, things like that really don’t make a lot of sense. I already knew that.
But once I was well versed with all of the game’s mechanics I found myself having a lot of fun with it. You’ve got two colored tiles, there are negative numbers and positive numbers delegated to each color. Moving a number subtracts one from the number pictured on a tile, so moving a -2 tile creates a -3 tile, but moving a 2 tile will create a 1 tile. Your goal is to match them all together so there are no pieces left, and it can get tough.
Like I said, Heatos is a really fun but challenging number puzzle game that makes better use of space than I think many other games have done in the past.
