Unique gameplay, lots of depth
Who would have ever thought that the word game concept introduced by Scrabble would make for a really cool action RPG? Mumbo Jumbo for Android is 50 levels of semi-RPG elements caked on top of Scrabble. You’ll run through these levels, upgrading your gear, as you take down enemies using cool mechanics all while matching words.
There is a lot of depth here, though I sometimes feel like it’s wasted. If you’ve played match-three games where the match-three mechanic is the game’s combat system and the very top banner image consisted of watching fights play out then you’ll see that this game borrows those visual elements and applies them here. Letters in the lower grid have a point system identical to Scrabble, and forming words based on higher scores will result in you doing more damage to your enemies.
I felt like the scoring was a bit too general because there would be times when I would get a few more points by playing one word than playing another but I’d end up doing the same amount of damage to enemies. Fortunately, as you play the game, you’ll come across enemies that introduce new gameplay mechanics to keep things fun. For instance, when dealing with spiders, you’ll need to use words that have the letter “e” in them, otherwise your attacks will do no damage.
Mumbo Jumbo is a simple game, but one that has quite a bit of depth despite the concept. I had a ton of fun playing it, and it was super refreshing to match words instead of gems.
