I never would have thought I’d be typing these words, but today I was impressed by a traffic racing game. Traffic Rider for Android is the most realistic traffic racing game that I’ve played, but that’s not what immediately sold me on the game. It was the entire package.
Running through the menus to get to the first level, I didn’t really think much of anything. I saw that the game had a career mode, as well as a free ride, an endless game, and a sort of time trial mode. Usually a traffic racer isn’t this fleshed out, so I thought those were great, but it didn’t sell me on it. It wasn’t until I started the first career mode, being seated in a first person view of a fully functional moped, that I realized how cool this game really is.
You drive around in first-person and everything in the game is absolutely gorgeous. For instance, in one of the levels, it looks like the sun is beginning to set and it’s one of the most gorgeous scenes I’ve seen on a mobile game. The speedometer also works on your moped. Controls are all based on the phone’s accelerometer, but the controls are mindbogglingly precise, and I actually preferred this over any other way I could have played the game.
Upgrades are plentiful and I found myself purchasing a new scooter not too far into the game, which also had another unique view. The game just kept hammering in the fact that the developers really cared about bringing a quality game to the Play Store, and they did.
Traffic Rider was a huge surprise. It’s the type of mobile game you would have assumed most others would have evolved to right now, but they haven’t. That’s okay, though. Because this game is the real deal.
