To say it’s been awhile since I’ve played a good extreme sports game would be an understatement. After all, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 is 15 years old. But I must say, for a mobile game, Snowboard Party 2 for Android is the closest I’ve felt to the THPS franchise in a really long time.
The first thing that struck me when I booted up the game was how much it respected my time. After the game booted up, I was faced with a regular menu screen. No ads, nothing asking me to log in, just a good old fashioned menu screen. There are multiple game modes to play, but I jumped in freestyle first. Before getting to play, the game asked me if I wanted to go through the tutorial. I chose to, and I recommend most people do, but it made me real happy it even asked.
The game controls like a dream. There is a virtual d-pad that you’ll use to accelerate, brake and steer. On the right side are a few buttons that you can use to jump, use grabbing tricks or grind. Everything felt really intuitive and responsive - a big surprise for a game like this.
Levels are well designed but I was a little thrown off by having to purchase levels with experience points. Each level has various objectives that challenge your skills on the board, and there are a lot of secrets paths to discover, too, but being stuck to play a single level until you save up enough experience points is a bummer. Unlocking new boards, characters and building your characters also requires experience points, too.
Snowboard Party 2 is a great snowboarding game for mobile. There aren’t a lot of tricks, but the mechanics are still solid. There is huge potential to build and progress your character however you want, and the game’s experience point system encourages you to keep playing.
