Review Makibot Evolve

Brandon Girod
Cool graphics, solid controls, relaxing gameplay
Rewards feel grindy, you’ll see a lot of reused assets
In Makibot Evolve for Android, you’ll explore a stunning, vivid, and unpredictable world filled with hundreds of jumping puzzles to solve, awesome power-ups, new characters to unlock, and more. It’s a one-touch endless runner that reminds me a lot of Doodle Jump.
If you’ve ever played a game called Doodle Jump then you’ll probably instantly recognize the gameplay premise for this one. You Makibot will automatically jump, so you just need to sort of pilot the bot around the screen, avoiding spikes and death, while trying to collect coins you can use further in the game.
The controls are really easy to use and are definitely responsive. Tapping either side of the screen will move your character in that direction. My only complaint is that the controls might be just a bit too sensitive. There are several areas in the game where you’ll need to land on small spaces in between spikes, and the sensitive controls can make this way more difficult than it really needs to be.
The game’s rewards are also a lackluster. The first character you unlock costs around 250 coins which isn’t too bad, but the next character costs a 1000, which would easily take an hour or more of straight playing to get. Considering these are all cosmetic, there really isn’t a lot of incentive to work towards unlocking them.
As a platformer, Makibot Evolve is okay. The atmosphere the game has is pretty cool, but the gameplay itself isn’t really fun. At the end of the day, it’s a game to simply help you pass the time when you’d rather be doing something else.
