Innovative gameplay, great graphics, good atmosphere
Flowers aren't the most enticing subject matter
Fads in mobile gaming change almost like seasons, though the amount of match-three games being churned out has always remained high. Lately, I’ve seen an increase in games looking to break that mold a bit. Blossom Blast Saga for Android is one of those. It takes the tired old genre and tries to breath a little life in it while retaining most of what fans really enjoy about the genre.
The first way it goes about this is by designing boards as honeycombs rather than a generic grid. As you might have guessed if you’ve played similar games, this gives the player an ability to draw a line through multiple matches without having to worry about them being on top or right next to matching tiles. This takes it a bit further by letting players grow their flowers. When you drag flower buds into each other, they’ll start to grow. If you match enough then they’ll eventually bloom which might set off a chain reaction.
The new gameplay elements don’t stop there, however. Some objectives will require you to make matches around a flower that needs to be fed by a certain amount of other matching flowers. These levels were among the most difficult and unforgiving because you really needed to make sure every move counted.
The animations and graphics were really well done as well. The best parts of the game involved making huge matches and just watching the screen burst to life with flowers.
Despite being a bit tired of matching games, I would definitely recommend Blossom Blast Saga. The gameplay is built on a strong foundation and does a lot of new things to freshen things up a bit. The added bonus is that the game looks fantastic too.
