Review Numberful - Math Game

Brandon Girod
Really great mechanics, easy to play, difficult to master, great aesthetic
Only one game mode, the visuals never change
It’s finally happened. Numberful for Android is a game that melds numbery-puzzle goodness with endless mechanics to bring the ultimate in both fun and frustration, depending on how much you really enjoy handling numbers. Fortunately, the math part of the game is simple, though it does become increasingly more difficult.
So unlike other number games, you’re not looking to match various sets of numbers. Instead, you’re given a grid of randomly placed positive and negative numbers. In the beginning, you need to match two numbers so that the end sum is one. After that, you need to do the same thing, but the end sum needs to be two. It then progresses to three, four, five, six, etc..
The first match is usually pretty simple: find -1 and match it with a 2. But over time, once you get into the twenties, you’ll notice that you’ll need to begin matching more than just two numbers together. In fact, there were times when I was matching up to six or seven tiles in order to get the right answer. All of this needs to be don as fast as possible in order ensure time doesn’t run out. Getting matches will throw a few seconds back on the clock, and other tiles will have bonus time that can be added if you use those numbers to create an equation.
There isn’t much more to the game beyond what you see in the gameplay, which is actually good. I found the game to be pretty relaxing considering I could think my way through it rather than having to time inconsistent jumps. Unfortunately, there aren’t any rewards, and the game environment does remain static throughout.
Numberful is a great puzzle game that doubles as a good arcade game. The mechanics are simple to learn, but difficult to master, and the gameplay itself has plenty to offer.
